Heavy pruning isn’t needed, but can be shaped immediately after the early summer bloom. Flower color will be affected by soil pH, with purple-blue coloration in acidic soils with good aluminum availability and pink flowers in more basic soils.
Tuff Stuff™ Mountain Hydrangea
Closely related to H. macrophylla, H. serrata has very similar cultural requirements but better flower bud hardiness for improved blooming. Tuff Stuff is a reblooming variety with large, very showy lace-cap flowers that bloom early in the summer and continue to produce new flowers right up until frost. The semi-double to double florets open with creamy coloration in the center before maturing to intense pink. Flower color will be purplish in more acidic soils. This is an excellent choice for climates where bigleaf hydrangeas struggle to overwinter.
